Emergency vet or poison control: which do I call?
Because xylitol acts so quickly, speed matters more here than with most other toxic ingestions. In most cases you should use both resources.
Go straight to an emergency vet if…
- Your dog is already weak, wobbly, vomiting, trembling, or collapsed, these can be signs of dangerously low blood sugar
- It has been more than 30–60 minutes since ingestion, since hypoglycemia can develop very quickly
- The product was a peanut butter, baked good, or pure xylitol source, which tend to carry higher doses per serving
- A poison control consultation or your vet has told you to bring the dog in
Call poison control first if…
- Your dog just ate the item seconds or minutes ago and seems otherwise normal
- You are unsure how much xylitol was actually in the product
- You need help deciding how urgently to act for your dog's specific weight
- You want a case number and treatment plan you can hand directly to your regular or emergency vet
How xylitol toxicosis develops
Xylitol triggers a much stronger insulin release in dogs than in humans, causing blood sugar to crash rapidly. A separate, less understood mechanism can cause liver injury at higher doses, sometimes without severe hypoglycemia first.
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
- Vomiting
- Weakness or lethargy
- Loss of coordination, stumbling
- Tremors or seizures in severe cases
- Collapse
Liver enzyme changes
- Increases in liver enzymes are often detectable on bloodwork during this window
- May occur even in dogs that did not show hypoglycemia symptoms
Liver injury and failure
- Clinical signs of liver injury may not appear until this point at higher doses
- Can progress to acute liver failure, particularly at doses above 500 mg/kg
- Hospitalization and monitoring are typically required through this window
