The short version
You do not need an account to use PetPoisonCalc, and we never ask for your name or details about your pet. What you type into a calculator stays in your browser. It is not sent to us or saved after you leave or refresh the page.
We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used, and Google AdSense to show ads on some pages (never on calculator pages). These Google services use cookies and similar technologies. You can limit them using the choices below.
Information collected
Calculator inputs. The weight, substance and amount you enter are processed by code running in your browser. They are not sent to PetPoisonCalc, Google, or anyone else, and they are not included in the page address.
Copy and share buttons. "Copy result" puts a text summary on your device's clipboard. "Share with my vet" opens your device's own share menu. The site does not send or store the summary. Whatever app you choose to share with handles it under its own policy.
Theme setting. The light or dark theme follows your device setting. If you use the theme button, the choice lasts only until you leave the page. The site's own code does not set cookies or use session storage.
My pets (optional). If you choose to save a pet on a calculator page, the pet's name, species, weight, and the date you saved it are stored in your browser's local storage on your device, so calculators can fill in the weight for you next time. This information never leaves your device: it is not sent to PetPoisonCalc, Google, or anyone else. Nothing is stored unless you tap Save. You can delete a saved pet at any time with the remove button next to its name, or by clearing your browser's site data.
Find a 24/7 emergency vet near me. This button opens a Google Maps search for emergency vets in a new tab. PetPoisonCalc does not ask for or see your location; Google Maps uses whatever location access you have already given your browser or the Maps app, under Google's own privacy policy. When you tap the button, Google Analytics records an anonymous "er_vet_click" event with only where on the page it was tapped, so we can tell whether the button is useful. No pet details or location are included.
Hosting logs. The site is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub logs visitors' IP addresses for security purposes, as described in GitHub's privacy statement.
Google Analytics. On every page, Google Analytics collects information such as the pages you visit, how you got to the site, approximate location (country or city), device and browser type, and how you interact with pages. It sets first-party cookies (such as _ga) to tell visits apart. Google states that Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. We use this information only in aggregate to improve the site.
Google AdSense. On pages that show ads (not calculator pages), Google and its partners may use cookies, device identifiers and similar technologies to show ads, limit how often you see an ad, measure performance and prevent fraud. See the advertising section below.
Email. If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include in your message. We use it only to reply and to fix any problem you report, and we do not add you to any mailing list.
Fonts and images. Fonts and photos are served from this site, not from third-party font or image services.
Advertising cookies and personalized ads
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet.
You can opt out of personalized advertising from Google in Google Ads Settings, and from many other vendors at optout.aboutads.info or youronlinechoices.eu in Europe. Learn more in How Google uses information from sites that use its services.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site works without cookies.
Affiliate links
PetPoisonCalc may add affiliate links in the future, for example through the Impact partner network. Right now the site has no affiliate links. The only Impact item on the site is a verification tag in the homepage code that confirms we own the site. It does not track visitors. If we add affiliate links later, clicking one may let the partner set its own cookies to credit us for a sale. We will label those links and update this policy. See our Affiliate Disclosure.
Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information
We do not sell personal information for money. However, some US state privacy laws, such as the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA, may treat the use of Google advertising cookies for personalized ads as "selling" or "sharing" personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
To opt out: (1) turn off personalized ads in Google Ads Settings; (2) use optout.aboutads.info; and (3) turn on Global Privacy Control (GPC) in your browser or extension. When this site detects a GPC signal, it asks Google AdSense to show only non-personalized ads and turns off ad personalization signals in Google Analytics for that visit. You can also email contact@petpoisoncalc.com with the subject "Do Not Sell or Share" and we will help.
Your rights in US states
Depending on where you live (for example California, Colorado, Connecticut, New Jersey, Oregon, Texas, Virginia and other states with privacy laws), you may have the right to know what personal information is collected about you, to access it, to correct it, to delete it, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information and of targeted advertising. You will not be treated differently for using these rights.
Because we do not keep accounts or profiles, we usually hold no personal information about you other than emails you send us. Data held by Google can be viewed and managed in your Google account and through the links above. To make a request, email contact@petpoisoncalc.com. We may need to ask for information to confirm the request. If we decline a request, you may appeal by replying to our answer with the word "Appeal".
Your rights in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, data protection laws such as the GDPR and UK GDPR apply. We rely on your consent for analytics and advertising cookies where consent is required, on legitimate interests for security logs, and on legitimate interests to reply to emails you send us.
For visitors in these regions, the site tells Google to keep analytics and advertising storage off by default (Google Consent Mode) until consent is given. You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the use of your personal data, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Google and GitHub may process data in the United States and other countries. They state that they use legal safeguards such as standard contractual clauses or the EU-US Data Privacy Framework for these transfers.
How long information is kept
Calculator inputs are never stored. Google Analytics keeps data according to the retention setting in our account (Google allows 2 to 14 months for most user-level data). Emails are kept only as long as needed to respond and keep a record of corrections. Google and GitHub keep their own data according to their own policies.
Children's privacy
PetPoisonCalc is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, email us and we will delete it.
Other websites
The site links to other websites, such as poison control centers, veterinary references and Unsplash. Their privacy policies, not this one, apply when you visit them.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the site handles information, for example by adding affiliate links or new tools, we will update this policy and the date at the top of this page.
